Insight Out 2010 goes stereoscopic

Digital and, in particular, stereoscopic productions and workflows were the focus of the Insight Out symposium at Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf (HFF) from 22 - 26 March 2010. Delegates from the film and television industry discussed the latest developments and projects with internationally renowned experts from Europe and the USA.

In talks and workshops on high-end digital cinema, independent digital cinema, serial HDTV production, stereo 3D production and 3D stop motion animation, participants from 28 countries learned about the latest developments in digital cinematography. The focus was on all aspects, from budgeting, filming and the specifics of shooting, to animation and post-production.

Joe Lewis (motion control for a number of films, including LORD OF THE RINGS) and Brian Van't Hul (VFX for CORALINE) demonstrated the concept of stereo 3D production und 3D stop motion animation for ALICE IN WONDERLAND and, in the practical part, ‘animated’ the participants to produce their own stereo sequences. Producer Phil Streather explained the various options for technical realisation using the example of his 3D productions and had the participants shoot real stereo 3D sequences in the HFF studio. Martin Hagemann gave some insight into the requirements for the narrative and the cut for stereoscopic productions.

In the Serial HDTV Productions workshop, Jan Fröhlich (Technical Director for CinePostproduction) and cameraman Heiko Merten demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of various camera systems and post-production methods.

The participants were able to seek comprehensive advice with their own projects. Miguel Ferros (digilab), Markus Bäuerle and Matthias Saulich (both from CinePostproduction), Steffen Scheid (Camelot Broadcast Services) and Phil Streather (Principal Large Formats) explained project-specific workflow options. This included the special features of the imaging techniques of various cameras and the implications for set work, post-production and the budgeting of productions.

At the matchmaking dinner sponsored by CinePostproduction, Exozet Effects and Camelot Broadcast Services the participants met up with industry representatives from Berlin und Brandenburg and were able to exchange notes about projects and new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere during the meal.
