DoPs camera lab 2010

CinePostproduction, Acht Frankfurt, Camelot and Pille invited DoPs to test various digital and stereoscopic camera systems like SI2K, Red One, Phantom II and Sony F35 as well as a stereo 3D rig incl. 2 Sony EX3 and SRW1. 25 participants enjoyed testing the cameras in different production environments and got a profund overview of post production workflows.

At the “Camera Lab” 2010 cinematographers were able to try out various camera systems for digital and stereoscopic footage on different sets, exchange notes with colleagues and directly review the results after post-production.

The promoters - CinePostproduction, Acht Frankfurt, Pille and Camelot - organised the elaborate Camera Lab in the style of the motor races of the 1980s. The venue was in Berlin's Cart und Event Center where cinematographers could experiment with various camera systems away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day production and test them to their heart's content in different scene sets. This was simply guaranteed to be fun.

The 25 cameramen and camerawomen had the use of four different and completely equipped sets, with cameras, suitable optics, dollies and rails, lighting, scenery and costumes. In addition to the SI2K, Red One, Phantom II and Sony F35 they also used a stereo-3D rig with 2 Sony EX3 and SRW1s.

A complete race was filmed with an SI2K that could be flexibly attached to various parts of the racing kart or directly to the helmet. In the Red One Box there was hectic activity in the interaction between mechanics and racing drivers. From high speed to slow motion: in the poker round the poker faces of the players could be precisely analysed with up to 1000 fps. At the same time, studio shots were simulated at another station with the kart mounted on a large turntable in front of a green screen.

On the second day of the Camera Lab participants were finally able to experience the efficiency potential of the cameras during a grading in the various Lustre suites at CinePostproduction.
